Mind Reading Madness

Have you ever caught yourself thinking… “I know exactly what he meant by that sigh” or “She rolled her eyes, so clearly she thinks I’m lazy”?

Congratulations—you’ve just fallen into one of marriage’s sneakiest traps: mind reading. The problem is, most of us are terrible psychics. We assume we know what our spouse is thinking, and nine times out of ten, we’re wrong. Cue defensiveness, arguments, or the dreaded silent treatment over something that never even happened.

Here’s the fix: ask, don’t assume. Instead of deciding your spouse’s sigh means disaster, try, “Hey, what was that sigh about?” You might discover it had more to do with work emails—or indigestion—than your marriage.

Action Tip:

Think of a time recently when you assumed you knew what your spouse was thinking. What would’ve happened if you had simply asked instead?
